What happens when your token balance runs out
What you see when a lookup is refused for a low balance, what happens to lookups that run on their own, and how to get going again.
3 min read
Before you start
- A DialClear account created at dialclear.co
Tip
Keep an eye on the balance at the top of the Tokens page before a big CSV upload.
Each lookup spends its tokens before it runs. If there are not enough tokens, DialClear does not run the lookup and does not charge you anything. This only applies to accounts that signed up at dialclear.co. Inside your CRM, lookups bill your CRM wallet instead.
What you see
- In the portal, the lookup stops and a message says your token balance is too low for this lookup, that nothing was looked up and no tokens were spent.
- Over the API, the call answers with a
402error that reads "Your token balance is too low for this lookup. Nothing was looked up and no tokens were spent. Buy tokens in the portal and try again." - In a CSV bulk job, the job does not start if your balance cannot cover the whole file. Nothing is spent.
Lookups that run on their own
Lookups nobody clicks, like 30 day protection and lookups your own systems send to DialClear, are skipped while the balance is too low. They run again the next time they are asked for, once you have tokens.
DialClear keeps a list of what was skipped. The Lookups skipped for lack of tokens card on the Tokens page shows the most recent ones, with when each was asked for, what kind of lookup it was, where it came from and how many tokens it needed.
You also get one email that says a lookup was skipped. It comes at most once a day, however many lookups are skipped.
Your history and your results stay as they were. Nothing is lost, and no lookup is left half done.
Get going again
Step 1. Open Tokens
Choose Tokens in the left menu.
Step 2. Buy tokens
Choose an amount and confirm the payment. See Buy tokens for your lookups.
Step 3. Run the lookup again
Once the tokens show in your balance, run the lookup again. Lookups that run on their own pick up the next time they are asked for.
Frequently asked questions
Will my API calls still work while the balance is empty?
They answer with the 402 error above until you buy tokens. Your key keeps working and nothing needs to be reset.
Can I see how many tokens a lookup needs before I run it?
Yes. The Tokens page lists what each kind of lookup costs.
Does a failed lookup use up tokens?
No. If a lookup fails, its tokens go back to your balance.
Is there an automatic top up?
Not today. You buy tokens when you need them.
